The Rivy Sams ‘Forever Camper’ Scholarship

Meet Lucas River 'Rivy' Sams

  • Who Is Rivy Sams?

Born Lucas River Sams at midnight on the dot (00:00) on 10.23.2020. His Mom, Missy, said he gained the nickname “Rivy” after coming home from 99 days in the NICU.

Rivy was Diagnosed with Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS) one week after birth. Despite his many challenges with WHS, Rivy's joy and laughter filled every room he entered. He was no stranger to his medical team but showed tremendous strength and resiliency through it all!

  • Rivy's Favorite Things

MUSIC! Rivy loved anything with a good beat or that was Rock n Roll. The Tonie box was a complete game changer for him, some of his favorites included: The Jungle Book, Trolls, Giraffes Can’t Dance, Encanto, Moana, and of course, Cocomelon!

Rivy was a true Charlestonian who loved his water time—no matter if it was a pool or bath. He also loved being around friends, his PIC classmates, and James B. Edwards teachers, and riding the school bus (just NOT when it would stop).

Rivy also deeply cared for his beloved nurse, Erin.

  • What Did Camp Mean to Rivy?

Rivy spent his first week at camp finding new friends, new fun, and new ways to move—he even took his first-ever steps on a gait trainer. He participated in the All Acres Farm Petting Zoo, Lowcountry Children's Museum Day, crafts, relay, hockey, and any movement he could get into!

Rivy was awarded the 'Forever Camper' award because the joy he felt and brought to Summer Camp is forever felt by us at Pattison's Academy.
